Thomas Telford's famous 1826 Menai Strait suspension bridge is less than a mile from the location of Robert Stephenson's famous tubular Britannia Bridge. The original tubular superstructure was severely damaged by fire in 1970. It was later demolished and replaced with an arch retrofitted into the original towers.
