Completed in 1964, the final bridge of Othmar Ammann's illustrious career, the Verrazano Narrows bridge still has the longest main span of any bridge in North America. I would be remiss if I didn't conjure the cliché: the towers are so far apart, the engineers accounted for the curvature of the Earth in their calculations.
