Tunkhannock Creek - Nicholson, Pennsylvania, USA

Photos by David Denenberg, please do not reuse without permission. It is difficult to convey the enormity of this bridge through pictures. Perhaps if I had caught a train crossing, you would be able to see how tiny the train looks compared to the bridge, like a little insect scurrying across the top. The Tunkhannock Viaduct contains more concrete than any bridge ever constructed. At its highest, the bridge towers 240 feet over the stream bed. The town of Nicholson is under there. The first picture was taken at a distance of about 3/4 of a mile. I could not fit the 2,375-foot length into one shot without a wide angle lens. This bridge, finished in 1915, was part of the same "Hallstead cutoff" project that also produced the nearby Martin's Creek Viaduct.
